A scenic drive along County-55 west of Walhalla reveals why locals call this beautifully wooded corner the Valley of the Gods.

When in northeastern North Dakota, block out a little time to drive through the Pembina River Gorge west of Walhalla to see why locals call this area the Valley of the Gods. All the trees and dramatic cliffs make it hard to believe that this is part of a state known for its flat prairie grasslands.

The gorge extends from Walhalla to the Canadian border and holds 12,500 acres of oak woodlands and wetland thickets. If you’re lucky, you might even glimpse moose, wild turkey, deer or elk.

Be aware that most of this 12-mile stretch is a gravel road, and there aren’t really any good spots to safely pull over for photo opportunities. Just take it slow and enjoy the ride; you'll want the time to appreciate the stunning scenery.
