Gracious hospitality and a carefully tended Victorian mansion (along with killer breakfasts and baked treats) make this B&B a stellar place to stay.

From the time you arrive at this 1906 home until the time you drive away, you'll feel as though you've discovered the just-right blend of unique lodging and level of interaction with owners Jim and Carol Carr. As we lugged a bulky, broken piece of luggage toward the front porch, Jim sprang to our aid and carted the bag up the stairs to our master suite, which boasts a king bed, a flat-screen TV, a comfortable sitting area, a private wraparound porch and a spacious bath -- all for $90 a night during high season. The suite is one of six guest rooms in this 8,000-square-foot mansion.Owners of Victorian bed-and-breakfasts can overload their properties with froufrou, but the Dakotah Rose prefers to accent architectural features rather than the era's decorating style. Tiffany stained-glass windows, leaded-glass designs, huge pocket doors, carefully inlaid hardwood floors and period light fixtures all star. A third-floor ballroom has become a place to watch TV, make microwave popcorn, grab a drink from the fridge, listen to music or play Pac-Man 1980s-style until quiet hours kick in at 10:30 p.m.The B&B stands on a residential street corner, set back from the sidewalk and beautifully landscaped with bushes and annuals. With nighttime temps dipping to the 50s, we'd hoped to sleep with the door to the private porch open and let the breeze waft through the screen door. But trains rumbling through town all night made sleeping difficult, and we couldn't drop off until we finally turned on the air-conditioner to drown out that noise. It was the one downside of our stay.In the morning, a breakfast of oven-baked peach French toast and sausage links followed heart-shape whole wheat scones and strawberry jam, plus a dish of fresh fruit topped with yogurt and crunchy granola. Fine china and crystal decked the table, and Jim topped off our coffee cups with brew poured from a sterling silver pot. All of it was hot and delicious, and the portions weren't so outlandish that you felt overwhelmed when you pushed back from the table. Plus, we got fresh-baked cookies for the car ride home.We've stayed at many B&Bs over the years; this one is truly among the best. From $80.
