Midwest Living Review

Steaks, seafood and homemade desserts bring hungry folks in to this cowboy-country steakhouse.

Although the Pastime serves lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., this is primarily a dinner spot. In the summer, guests seat themselves on the screened-in patio and watch the trains rumble through this old railroad town. Tablecloths and old wooden floors lend a touch of elegance to the restaurant, but casual dining is the name of the game in western North Dakota; water spots on the silverware and straight-talking servers are par for the course. Don’t be surprised to see ranchers, hunters and local oil rig workers saddling up seats and slicing into thick steaks.

The dinner menu features lots of red meat, seafood and pasta dishes, and Friday is all-you-can-eat crab night. Lunch is a less-impressive selection of burgers, chicken wraps and a smattering of salads. The patty melt makes a heavy meal with an overly thick hamburger patty slathered with an overdose of cheese and sauteed onions and a side of standard French fries. The homemade lemon cheesecake for dessert, however, is divine with a ground almond/graham cracker crumb crust and good flavor.
