Midwest Living Review

Kendra L. Williams
Open year-round, this classy guest lodge with sweeping badlands views caters to couples, scrapbookers and quilters.

You'll get a steak dinner and a hot breakfast with your stay at this quiet 3,500-square-foot retreat 7 miles southwest of Medora. Seven guest rooms, each with a private bath, feature quilts made by owner Joann Douglas, and the decor throughout is best described as Western chic. A great room with towering floor-to-ceiling windows faces a badlands canyon and offers huge stone hearths, gas fireplaces, leather furniture, gleaming hardwood floors and Western art. The rooms aren't big, but the beds are comfortable. FYI alert: There's no TV (in case that bothers you) and our bathroom was tiny, with no space around the sink to perch toiletries. But if you're a scrapbooker or quilter, you'll love the big tables to spread out on in the sunny dining room. Our hosts were gracious at breakfast, offering an egg and cheese casserole, bacon and sausage, fresh fruit, and pastries, and bringing their cups of coffee in to chat with us before we headed out for the day. We welcomed that chat, because our first impression from the day before wasn't exactly strong. A sign on the door encourages guests to take off shoes and carry (rather than roll) luggage through the house because of all of the dust outside. But both owners watched us struggle with several bags without offering to help, and were rather brusque as they prepared dinner, diminishing the welcome we were expecting. But overall, the inn is a quiet, comfortable, classy place to stay, with amazing views. From $175.
