Midwest Living Review

Kendra L. Williams
Even mountain biking newbies will find themselves at ease renting and riding with these passionate cyclists.

Biking the Maah Daah Hey Trail is a great way to exercise out in North Dakota's badlands. But if you've never done it before, it can be a little intimidating. There are gates to open and close, rock-studded ruts to avoid, forking trails with steep drop-offs -- not to mention rumors of mountain lions. But if you're in reasonably good shape and are eager to see what a part of this 110-mile trail has to offer, head to Dakota Cyclery. Loren and Jennifer Morlock have owned their cycling business for 30 years, opening in Medora in 1994 and operating seasonally. Jennifer is a petite powerhouse, with seemingly boundless energy and patience as she shows newbies how the bike gears work before heading out on the trail. The lesson seems longer than the ride, but it's important to learn about how best to maneuver the trail and position your body on the bike. Jen will tailor a ride to your comfort level, hop on and off her bike to get the gates, shout words of encouragement as necessary and show you wildlife along the way that you might have missed. (Was the right thumb the "go faster" gear? Or the left? That's pretty much what we were focused on during our first ride.) She stops along the way at particularly breathtaking spots for photography. She'll also tailor overnight trips for you by picking you up at your hotel, dropping you at a point along the trail, picking you up at a rendezvous point later in the day and taking you back to a hotel for hot showers and dinner. Her enthusiasm for the sport is infectious. If you're not up for mountain biking but still want to get some exercise, Dakota Cyclery also rents touring bikes by the hour for just tooling around Medora. Rates change seasonally; call and check for the most current offers.
