Frontier Fort Bar and Grill

Picture this: A giant buffalo statue next to Interstate-94. After driving past it thousands of times in your travels through North Dakota, you finally stop and notice the old replica fort sitting nearby. The lower level is a souvenir shop, the upper level a bar and grill. Walk up the narrow wooden staircase and you find yourself in the Frontier Fort Bar and Grill with wood floors, wood walls, wood tables, a wood ceiling, and decor consisting of old beer logo lamps and plenty of taxidermy. This smoke-free, family-friendly bar has a rustic sort of charm, but the food unfortunately lacks in taste and appeal. The bison, elk or beef burgers are only $3.95 ($5.95 with fries), and the portion is decent at a quarter-pound of meat, but you get what you pay for. Although bison is leaner than beef, the meat in this burger was overly dry, thin and uninteresting. Ample ketchup and mustard help, but only so much. The fries are standard fast-food fare. On the plus side, the beer is cold and the staff is friendly. We wouldn't mind stopping here again for a cold beer; the humble, rustic atmosphere is nice. We just wish the food were more appealing.
