Midwest Living Review

Handmade pastas, succulent sauces and warm servers make Taste of Italy a must-try.

From the moment you walk in and hear "The Phantom of the Opera" on the sound system, you know you're in for a memorable night. Formerly known as Stella's, Taste of Italy offers a two-story dining room decked with crystal chandeliers, sweeping red curtains and kitschy framed photographs of Marilyn Monroe look-alikes. It easily welcomes groups of teens dressed for prom, couples on date nights and families with babies who just love to get covered in spaghetti and meatballs. Come as you are; you won't leave hungry. Believe it or not, most patrons order the spaghetti and meatballs. ("Yes, you could make it at home," our server told us, "but it won't taste as good as ours.") We suppose that's true. But we couldn't resist the Gorgonzola chicken, a pounded-thin cutlet that comes bathed in a rich Gorgonzola butter sauce and al dente rigatoni pasta on the side topped in tomato sauce ($13). We also tried the lasagna, a generations-old recipe that stuffs handmade sausage patties between layers of handmade pasta ($13). We could cut the chicken with a fork and only wished the pasta alongside had been fettucine Alfredo; the lasagna was a slice of baked bubbly tomato-filled goodness that two people could easily have shared. Because we started our meal with a fresh-from-the-oven loaf of Italian bread dipped in olive oil, we didn't have room for dessert. But it was great to relax over coffee and see the smiles on other diners' faces match our own.
