Hi-Ho South

Although it claims to have one of the best burgers in North Dakota, Hi-Ho South has all the charm of a badly lit bowling alley and a location better suited to a chiropractor's office. Located in a strip mall on the south side of Fargo, the restaurant wastes no expense on decor. With a drop-in ceiling, industrial tile floor and tables that could've come straight from the Fargo VFW, the space feels like it could've had a past life as a construction contractor's office. However, if you are looking for cheap eats with a classic deep-fried diner menu, this place has it. The burgers are hearty, although simple -- if you want cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo, upgrade to the deluxe cheeseburger ($4.65). The Hi-Ho Special is a cheeseburger, fries and fountain pop or 12-ounce tap beer for $7.25. The toppings are traditional: shredded iceberg lettuce and prewrapped American cheese slices. The fries are piping hot, although unseasoned. However, at these prices, you don't expect organic arugula and artisan Vermont white cheddar. For the hungry souls in your crew, order any super combo of all-you-can-eat fries and bottomless soda for $3.30. Squish the bun down, take a bite and reminisce on the flavor of this old-school diner hamburger.
