Midwest Living Review

Beth Schatz Kaylor
RV sites fill up fast at this popular Garrison Dam-adjacent campground, but the primitive tent camping area leaves much to be desired.

With Lake Sakakawea and the infamous fishing waters of the Garrison Dam tailrace all within casting distance, this campground is in North Dakota fisherman’s heaven. Throw in the fact that the state’s fish hatchery is next door and the campground has its own trout pond … are you sensing a theme?

The Downstream Campground isn’t just for fishermen though.  This popular campground, set in a wooded valley protected from those famous North Dakota winds, offers electric hook-up at each of its 101 RV sites with plenty of open grassy areas to set up the deck chairs, throw a log on the campfire and enjoy the weekend.  Kids run loose, biking around and playing on the new playground equipment.  Guests are welcome to check out volleyballs, horseshoes and Frisbees from the main office.  There are showers located near each section of RV sites; bring flip-flops—stepping onto the cold wet tile floor wasn't appealing.

However, this campground loses appeal in its primitive camping section.  Drive to the end of the road and a paved cul-de-sac welcomes tenters, who set up on grassy patches close to the road.  RVs are allowed to park in this area too, giving it a camping-in-the-Wal-Mart-parking-lot vibe. Only vault toilets are available in this section, so campers in the primitive area need to either prepare for a mile-long hike to the RV area or hop in the car.
