Midwest Living Review
Open since 2012, Laughing Sun in downtown Bismarck has quickly become a favorite local drinking spot for its freshly brewed craft beers. Staffed by knowledgeable and enthusiastic servers more than happy to discuss the products, this is North Dakota’s only pub with an on-site brewhouse. Order up a strawberry wheat–the most popular pint–and ask your server for a quick tour of the brewing facilities; they’ll be glad to show you around.
The Laughing Sun’s interior is cozy, casual and quirky. Local art hangs above repurposed church pews set along the wall for space-efficient seating. The rotating beer menu is handwritten on a chalkboard, complete with details like IBU, ABV and OG (don’t worry, the bartender will explain what all that means if you don't know). A seasonal apricot wheat makes a great refresher during warm weather, and the thick, dark porter is exactly what you want to drink on an icy North Dakota winter night. In the summer, a garage door opens up for instant al fresco atmosphere and additional seating on the sidewalk. Don’t forget to check the website for Laughing Sun’s concert schedule—the co-owners are big supporters of local artists and keep the pub hopping with lots of live music.
Patrons should be aware that aside from small bowls of free pretzels, there’s no food served. However, regulars know you're welcome to order eats from Fireflour Pizza next door, which will deliver hot pies right to your table at Laughing Sun.
