Midwest Living Review

Fans of links-style golf will enjoy the seclusion and challenge of The Prairie Club's two, 18-hole courses in Nebraska's Sandhills region.

Undulating sand dunes covered in prairie grass create great golf topography at The Prairie Club, a semiprivate golf country club that opened on Memorial Day 2010. Here you'll find three courses -- with another in the works -- surrounded by prairie, pine forests and the beautiful Snake River Canyon. The atmosphere at the semiprivate club is best described as upscale lodge. Guests can enjoy a steak ($42) and high-end liquor when dining on the patio and decks overlooking the courses. The lobby and dining spaces are appointed with dark woods and leather furniture, with a few chandeliers and leopard prints for a feminine touch. The guest rooms ($200 for nonmembers) include amazingly comfy mattresses and bedding, for a good night's sleep after a day of golf and an evening of stargazing. The courses themselves are varied. The 18 holes of The Pines Course combine the sandhills and a pine forest with play near the canyon rim. The 18 holes of The Dunes Course are more rugged, with the wind affecting golfers' strategies. Things are even more laid back on the 10-hole Horse Course, where the winner of each hole determines the next shot -- kind of like the basketball game. Finding the tee boxes is half the fun on the courses, which have few markings in keeping with the club's minimalistic approach. Golfers often play near antelope, deer and wild turkey. If you're willing to travel to this remote location outside Valentine, Nebraska, great golfing awaits.
