Midwest Living Review
This combination restaurant/bookstore/town meeting place is both inviting and intriguing. It's the only restaurant in Brownville and that's fine, because the food is good. We enjoyed a yummy country quiche with a green salad and a moist blueberry muffin. The ingredients were fresh and the presentation pretty. After the meal, we couldn't resist the draw of six bright and inviting rooms lined with full, well-categorized bookshelves of both vintage and recent volumes. There is no rush to leave, as there are plenty of spots among the antique furniture to sit and read in quiet. The Lyceum sells pieces from its rotating collection of paintings and sculptures and offers a top-floor forum room. The space is used for local gatherings and lectures about art, politics and other current events. Visitors get the vibe that this is a well-informed, well-cultured small town. The store's owners also operate the Spirit of Brownville cruise boat and The River Inn.
