Midwest Living Review

Lisa Meyers McClintick
Towering aisles and piles of books lure in lovers of good reads and collectible editions.

If you’re prone to claustrophobia or easily overwhelmed, you might not last here. If, however, you shun e-books and love digging through real books, block off an hour or more to wander the tall aisles. Bestsellers and novels in particular are so packed, you may have to step around a few piles on the floor. At a rough guess, close to 120,000 volumes fill the long narrow store. Approach it like an adventure and enjoy scoring a few deals and quirky finds. Browse for cookbooks, glittery cinema books from the 1950s and funky art books.

It can even feel a museum with intriguing medical and professional journals such as a $75 Eclectic Obstetrics guide from 1855. Best of all are historical and classic titles reflecting the region: novels by Willa Cather and books on the railroad industry, pioneers and guidebooks to the West.

A little hint: Do a few neck stretches before you hit the books. It helps with that constant head tilt to read the spines.

Titles start at $4.
