Midwest Living Review

Trees are the focus of fun and learning as parents and their kids enjoy trails, exhibits and apple pie.

This farm is laid out so visitors can see a bit of the picturesque grounds for free, including the historic Morton barns used by Arbor Day founder J. Sterling Morton. The lovely, white Apple House Pie & Garden Cafe is also open to all, and it's appealing with its rocking chairs, picnic tables and the smells of fresh apple cider and deep-dish pie. Trees are the overriding theme here, and the farm's admission-required Tree Adventure attraction is a great way to spend at least three hours exploring nature with elementary-age kids. They adore the outdoor classroom, which includes music-making, hammocks and building areas. Climbing up the 50-foot high treehouse deck is also an essential experience, and the view of the forest canopy is pretty. Paved and mulch hiking trails include signage questions about animal tracks impressed in the concrete and opportunities to identify bird calls. Art pieces, beautiful bridges and "kissing trees" all add to the simple beauty here. It's easy to skip by the indoor exhibits, but kids will enjoy the interactive tree info. The movie theater is cool too, and rather than a possibly dull documentary, the show is a compilation of famous movie clips involving trees. In the fall, visitors can pick and buy bags of apples and enjoy a 20-acre corn maze. For those not interested in hiking, the farm also offers tram tours. Open daily except major holidays. Admission charged.
