Midwest Living Review

Nebraska artists are the stars of the show at this free museum.

Fans of traditional and contemporary art will find plenty of things to admire among the Museum of Nebraska Art’s state-owned collection (more than 5,000 pieces strong). The bold colors of the paintings and quilts pop against the neutral walls, and the more subdued pieces beckon visitors in for a closer look. Best of all, admission is free.

Nebraskan artists like George Catlin, Robert Henri and J. Laurie Wallace have created the majority of the paintings, photos, sculptures and quilts on display. Visitors can also view Nebraska wildlife depictions by John James Audubon. The museum hosts summer concerts in its sculpture garden, a pleasant setting that holds some interesting bronze works.

Combine a trip to the museum with a stroll through The Bricks historical district, where you can explore cute boutiques, the Tru Cafe and the Wooly Mammoth yarn store.
