Midwest Living Review

The Children's Museum in Kearney is all about letting kids have fun and learn at the same time.

Kids love to explore, and there's no better place in town to let them loose to do just that. The Kearney Area Children's Museum offers 18,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits divided into zones. The Science Zone, for example, teaches kids about biology and paleontology, astronomy and physics. Learning about dinosaurs, kids can dig for fossils in rubber "dirt." Learning about space, junior astronaut helmets add to the play. In the Agriculture Zone, a small barn stores tools, fabric corn stalks wait to be picked, and kids plant their own veggies by tucking them into the rows of the garden. There's even a John Deere tractor with a video screen for simulating work on a farm. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. You will also find the Art, Construction, Medical, and Music and Dance zones. The Grocery Zone is a miniature grocery store complete with carts and shelves of toy food. The Fire Zone features a real fire truck. There's simply too much to list here, and it's easy to imagine kids spending a whole day at the museum and not getting to it all. The museum offers space for birthday parties, and they have an overnight program for groups looking for a fun lock-in. Parents or guardians are expected to supervise their children. Admission costs $5 for each member of the group (parents included), but kids under 1 get in free. Open daily, Wednesday through Sunday.
