Spend several hours shopping these eclectic antiques stores.

It would be easy to spend the bulk of a day browsing among the displays at Grand Island's downtown antiques stores. Six of the stores have items that fit well into eclectic and country decor. Vintage fans, pottery and distressed painted furniture fills stores, whether they be single-owner or multidealer antiques malls. You'll find the Heartland Antique Mall, the Railroad Towne Antique Mall, One the Avenue, Clutter Bug Antiques, Alley Cat Antique Mall and the Milestone Gallery. Store hours vary based on seasons and whims, so call ahead. The two larger malls, Heartland Antique Mall and Railroad Towne Antique Mall, seemed to offer the most merchandise. We liked the carriage display in front at the Heartland store, and the steps going down to the basement got our treasure hunter's heart beating faster. (We always find good and cheap stuff in basements.) Railroad Towne boasts more than 40 dealers, with window displays full of distressed furniture, vintage pails and watering cans filled with faux flowers. Clutter Bug Antiques had a cute window display of wedding dresses and vintage cake toppers, celebrating June brides. The Milestone Gallery advertises estate merchandise and gift items. Alley Cat Antiques' sign and jumbled array of merchandise made it look a little more like a flea market, but we enjoyed the display of target shooting papers. If you have time, plan to also stop at Prairie Winds Arts Center (also on this street) for a variety of paintings, photographs, jewelry and sculptures.
