Midwest Living Review

Cyclists and visitors to St. Louis, Kansas City and nearby Columbia come here for the comfortably grand ambience as well as the cooking classes.

You might be surprised about the roots of this elegant building: Though it fits right in with the antebellum buildings along the same street, the Yates House was actually built in 1991. Proprietors Conrad and Dixie Yates have worked hard to faithfully reproduce the atmosphere of an older time so guests can enjoy modern comforts such as flat-screen TVs amid classic antique-style furnishings. Formerly the Yateses' family home--the extra bedrooms were originally built for their grown children--the B&B is a popular stop for cyclists riding Missouri's Katy Trail through this tiny town. (Which, for the record, locals pronounce "ROASH-port," not "roach-port.") Yates House is also a destination in itself, thanks to Dixie's monthly cooking classes. Show up on Friday evening and get right to work helping prepare a light high-end supper using only the freshest ingredients. Saturday might include a tour of Rocheport's Les Bourgeois Vineyards before your stint as sous-chef begins. Dixie knows what she's doing, so even experienced cooks can expect to learn something and have fun with their fellow students. Rooms in either the Yates House proper or the Garden House addition next door start at $189; it's $150 extra per person for the classes.
