Midwest Living Review

Kristin Schmitt
The Weston Red Barn Farm offers a charming opportunity for city kids (and adults) to explore their Midwestern roots by learning about a working farmstead.

Who could image a native of sunny, coastal California happily choosing a new way of life on a Missouri farm? Certainly a homegrown Midwesterner could. And so could the West Coast transplant and owner of the Weston Red Barn Farm in Weston, Missouri (about 30 miles northeast of downtown Kansas City, Missouri). Fond childhood memories of cross-country visits to a family farm in rural Missouri inspired Steve Frey and wife Cynthia to open the farm to share their love for rural living and to teach today's youth about our continued reliance on animals and crops. Stop into the Weston Red Barn Farm during spring, summer or fall to take a stroll through the farmyard among the roosters and chickens, cows and pigs, and horses. No "exotic" potbelly pigs or llamas here -- just traditional farm animals. Want to learn a little more about the daily workings of the farm? Pay the $5 School Tour fee and you can join in on one of the frequent field trips by area school children for an educational narration. Have a taste for some fresh produce? The farm supports local growers by selling their fresh offerings daily. Seasonal peaches, tomatoes, sweet corn, zucchini, melons and more are frequently available in the Country Store. You can even get into the agricultural spirit yourself with U-pick crops of blackberries in the summer and apples and pumpkins in the fall. The Country Store also offers a wide selection of country-inspired dinnerware and home decorations, handmade candles, soaps and lotions, old-fashioned games and toys, and cupboards full of jams, jellies, relishes, sauces and more.
