Midwest Living Review

Weston is a multi-faceted town where you can buy natural fiber clothing or cowhides, savor four-star dining or the local pub, and explore fascinating historical roots.

Once known as a 'tobacco capital' and an important steamboat stop along the Missouri River (the river changed course in 1881), Weston celebrates its heritage across 22 city blocks that were placed on The National Register of Historic Places, in 1972. Beautifully refurbished and historically faithful brick and painted facades line Main Street and the town boasts more than 100+ pre-Civil War buildings. Weston has also created a self-guided Historic Sites Tour, with nearly 100 stops, from dozens of historic mansions to the legendary McCormick Distillery and 1847 Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Today, most shops open from Thursday or Friday through Sunday, when streets bustle with enthusiastic customers. There's a distinct western flare to many shops, but you'll also find vintage cameras and blingy purses, in addition to several art studios. In addition to McCormick, Weston is the hometown of Pirtle Winery and Weston Brewing Company, founded in 1842. Savor brunch in an 1848 'white lace' cottage or a custom-flavored malt at an old-fashioned soda fountain. Enjoy fresh breakfast pastries at The Saint George Hotel or a full morning meal at one of several bed and breakfast establishments. This small town offers plenty of opportunities for staying busy, while local museums provide historical context for the rise and fall - and rising again - of Weston.
