Midwest Living Review

Jess Hoffert
If you're in the neighborhood, make a stop at Sweet Art to feed the stomach and the soul.

Sweet Art was born out of a marriage between a baker and an artist. With one step into this quaint neighborhood combo bakeshop-art gallery, customers instantly feel the love.

Cbabi Bayoc is the husband and artist in residence; his brightly colored and somewhat eclectic work covers the walls with beautiful, thought-provoking paintings depicting mostly African-American subjects with themes of love, music and identity. At the back of the bakeshop, Cbabi’s wife, Reine, whips up batches of cute, homemade cupcakes (vegan options available). Our favorite was the sweet potato pie flavor ($2.75), topped with a modest amount of cinnamon cream cheese frosting and a sprinkling of graham cracker crumbs. These aren’t the oversize, topping-loaded cupcakes of shopping malls; these are like the ones Grandma used to make.

In addition to baked goods, Sweet Art serves a limited lunch menu with specialties like the Sweet Burger ($8.25), a vegan patty with mixed greens, tomato, vegan spread and ketchup. The combination of food and art make this place worth visiting.
