Midwest Living Review

Amy Lynch
This old-school eatery dishes up a wide array of tasty pastas and other traditional Italian fare.

Family owned-and-operated Cunetto House of Pasta has been a fixture on The Hill, St. Louis’ predominately Italian neighborhood, since 1974. Not much has changed through the years—the decor is dated with drop ceilings, candleabra chandeliers, dark wood paneling and patterned carpets. For the regular customers, though, this is all part of the charm.

Obviously, pasta is the name of the game; pretty much any shape you want with any kind of sauce you want. At lunchtime, pastas are available in small and large portion sizes, but you can only get one-size orders at dinnertime. Dinner also ups the ante to include steaks, seafood, veal and chicken entrees, all priced in a very reasonable $14 to $20 range. Be prepared to share; even the small servings are ginormous. Meals start with bottomless baskets of basic fresh bread, and the toasted ravioli with marinara dipping sauce ($6.95) makes a great starter.

We enjoyed the spaghettini con broccoli ($8.15 for the small lunchtime portion), a huge plate of nicely cooked al dente pasta drenched in a creamy alfredo-ish sauce with chunks of broccoli and mushrooms. Yummy. A tortellini with meaty red Bolognese sauce ($8.95) and a seafood linguini studded with shrimp and crabmeat ($11) proved equally good choices.

If you’re looking for a romantic date-night destination, Cunetto’s probably isn’t your place, but for a filling family meal of tasty, traditional Italian food at reasonable prices, it’s certainly a good stop.
