Crown Candy Kitchen

Located just a few minutes from the Gateway Arch, Crown Candy Kitchen is a St. Louis landmark that has stood the test of time. This small corner ice cream and candy shop was established in 1913 and still serves up homemade specialties to locals and tourists every day. Don't expect anything contemporary here -- there's a soda fountain behind the corner, a jukebox in front and Coca-Cola paraphernalia mounted on the walls. While Crown Candy Kitchen is best known for its ice cream, shakes and malts, the shop offers a variety of old-fashioned sandwiches, including a tasty egg salad and a turkey bacon melt. But save room -- a lot of room -- for their large ice cream sundaes. The ice cream is 14 percent butterfat and toppings are blended right in the kitchen's antique copper candy kettle. You may even be challenged to drink five malts in 30 minutes -- a Crown Candy tradition. On your way out, stop by the candy counter and sample some of their homemade chocolate confections, including the house specialty Crown Candy Hash, which consists of marshmallows covered with chocolate and pecans.
