Midwest Living Review

No need to pay a thing to walk around the Delmar Loop, a St. Louis historic district offering lots of shops, clubs and restaurants.

Seeking the hip side of St. Louis? Look no further than the Delmar Loop, a neighborhood that boasts an eclectic mix of shops, nightclubs, a lunar-themed motel and restaurant, and a bowling alley/martini lounge. The streetcars that gave Delmar Loop its name are long gone, but this historic neighborhood not only remains vital, it manages to pack a lot of fun stuff into just six blocks. The 140 businesses that line Delmar Boulevard include boutiques, hip nightclubs, unique restaurants, fast-food joints (Chipotle, Jimmy John's, Ben & Jerry's), a bowling alley/martini lounge, and one vintage record store. The district's latest additions, the Moonrise Hotel and its Eclipse restaurant and Moonrise Rooftop Terrace, fit in perfectly with their lunar theme, cool feel and unique city view. If you're looking for history, check out the St. Louis Walk of Fame, which honors 116 famous natives with stars embedded in the sidewalk a la its Hollywood counterpart. Who knew Phyllis Diller, Betty Grable and Tennessee Williams all hailed from St. Louis? While those folks may not conjure up images of the city, one famous citizen, rock 'n' roll pioneer Chuck Berry, still calls it home. Once a month you can see him perform at Blueberry Hill, a legendary Loop nightclub and restaurant. You can also find live music at The Pageant, a splashy, art deco-style concert venue that plays host to an eclectic lineup of performers, ranging from Matisyahu and Yo La Tengo to Bruce Hornsby and Rob Zombie. The Loop is also home to the Tivoli Theatre, which has been restored to its 1920s glory and now shows art films, and the playfully decorated Pin-Up Bowl bowling alley and martini lounge.
