Midwest Living Review

Damaine Vonada
Though artfully arranged and decorated, this bakery-boutique falls flat.

If you like shopping at thrift stores, you'll love East Commercial Street in Springfield, Missouri, where a cluster of secondhand and resale shops offer everything from antiques to used clothing and furniture to flea market-like merchandise. One of the more interesting shops in this historic urban neighborhood is Red Velvet, a spacious, well-organized boutique with funky shabby-chic decor and an extensive collection of women's fashions from the 1960s and 1970s. Although it's a fun place to browse, don't expect to find many bargains at Red Velvet, which also sells a variety of vintage clothes online. Daytime dresses start at about $45, and recycled wedding gowns can cost $300. Red Velvet's owners also have launched a line of retro clothing like the Piano Lesson dress, a black-and-white checked, Jackie Kennedy-inspired, sleeveless shift priced at $80. In a clever nod to the store's name, a sweet shop selling red velvet and other flavors of cupcakes occupies one corner of Red Velvet. While generously sized, the cupcakes are not particularly moist or flavorful, but chrome-legged tables and chairs lend the sweet shop an old-fashioned vibe and make it a relaxing spot to satisfy your sweet tooth with cake and bubble tea. You may have to go looking for someone to serve you. On the Saturday we visited, the store seemed short-staffed, with clerks preoccupied on the computer. Given the spunky tone of the shop's website, we expected more hands-on service. Still, this is a fun addition to Springfield.
