Midwest Living Review

Dine on upscale pub grub and house-made beer at Springfield's only brew pub.

Springfield Brewing was originally founded as the Paul Mueller Co. in 1997, and the beers brewed and bottled here still bear the Mueller label. The restaurant, in downtown Springfield, is spread over two stories and an outdoor patio. Polished wood makes the dining room shine as does a floor-to-ceiling wall of windows revealing giant steel fermenters.Pizzas are the specialty (that's what we had -- it was great!) served with traditional toppings or with barbecued chicken, Jamaican jerk chicken or cheddar, bacon and tomato. Pasta dishes include a nice Jambalaya fettuccine with pan-seared chicken and andouille sausage. You can also order fish and chips, chicken potpie or steak. Most entrees run $10-16; 10-inch pizzas cost less than $10.Visitors can find a variety of house-brewed Mueller beers on tap at any time, including a pale ale (our favorite), an unfiltered wheat beer (the best seller), a Munich-style lager, and a family of beers called the Black Sheep that includes three different styles of stout and a brown ale. Seasonally the brewery adds something special to the beer menu: Kolsch in spring, Oktoberfest in the fall and a Doppel Bock in the winter.
