Midwest Living Review

Damaine Vonada
This bed-and-breakfast has a convenient location and nice amenities, but the inn's average accommodations aren't worth the price.

The Walnut Street Inn in Springfield, Missouri, has a lot going for it. It's handy to both Missouri State University and downtown Springfield; it's in a historic, tree-shaded neighborhood; its guests get to enjoy amenities like whirlpool tubs and fireplaces; and because the inn encompasses three buildings that are each more than 100 years old, its tastefully decorated rooms and suites are unique and have plenty of character. Unfortunately, the level of service and the quality of the accommodations does not merit the inn's rates, the majority of which are $149 and $179 plus taxes. Carpets have numerous spots and stains; the upholstered furniture looks faded and worn; and the beds are outfitted with minimum pillows and sheets; and blankets and comforters are old and dingy. Outside, the poorly lighted exterior steps and pathways are crooked, uneven and broken, which does not make it easy to roll -- let alone carry -- a suitcase. Served by courteous staff members in a pleasantly sunny room of the Main House, breakfast consists of dishes like an overnight egg casserole and strips of bacon that are tasty but rather ordinary. Overall, the inn has great potential, but it needs some updates, repairs and improved creature comforts.
