Midwest Living Review
New Madrid’s Historical Museum provides a perky peek at the town's past.
Visitors can no longer order a drink at the one-time saloon housing the New Madrid Historical Museum, but they will enjoy a refreshing view of the little Mississippi River village’s past. New Madrid (pronounced New MAD-rid) may be small, but it packs a big history, including some whopping earthquakes in 1811 and 1812 that were felt as far away as Canada and the Gulf of Mexico. A well-produced film details the quakes, as well as New Madrid’s Native American, pioneer and Civil War history. A stroll through the exhibits and artifacts brings the experience full circle.
Stop in the fun gift store on the way out to pick up a clever “It’s Our Fault” New Madrid T-shirt. The museum is open year-round, admission charged.
