Midwest Living Review

Diana Lambdin Meyer
Built in 2004, this bed-and-breakfast offers four quiet rooms and a great breakfast.

This is the farm where innkeeper Donna Balke was raised, and she and her husband, Bud, treat guests like family. They tore down the decrepit family home a few years back to build their dream home, an adults-only bed-and-breakfast based loosely on the floor plan of the home Donna was raised in. It has a large, inviting front porch with wicker furniture and a big swing. Guests can choose the Route 66 room (with car floor mats as the bath mats), the Civil War room (with a chess set of Union and Confederate soldiers, which was fine, and a Confederate flag hanging on the wall, which might bother some guests), a room that pays tribute to Donna's mother (with her wedding dress and recipes) or the room that Bud calls "the frou-frou room," which has a bathroom that opens to the bedroom. All are a flat $85, cash or check, no credit cards, please. Every room has a private bathroom and a TV. Breakfast often includes an egg casserole and fresh-squeezed orange juice, and guests like to enjoy their coffee on the porch overlooking the family farm. Chickens wander the backyard, and roosters crow each morning.
