You'll get a sweet, simple but thorough overview of Route 66 at this free attraction.
Located in the Peggy Palmer Summer Public Library, this is one of only three museums that pay homage to the Mother Road. (One is in Clinton, Oklahoma, and the other in Meramec, Missouri, near St. Louis.) What separates this one from the others is the extensive map collection. This is also a research center, so there's a large collection of books, blueprints from the road construction and rare maps (not just of Route 66, but of other major U.S. highways). With little vignettes about the diners, gas stations, motels and communities built around Route 66, the museum provides a good overview of what travel was like on the road 50 years ago.
