Midwest Living Review

Hannah Agran
A typical happy hour crowd congregates at this River Market bar-restaurant, popular with young professionals who want to go country for the evening.

Don't let the name fool you. The country in the restaurant's name doesn't refer to rolling green hills, but rather to the music on the jukebox. It might seem an odd theme for an urban bar popular with young professionals, but here in Kansas City, which has influences from both the South and West, it works. You'll hear standards like "King of the Road" and "Big Bad John," and the servers wear shirts that look like something your garage mechanic would wear.

A long bar dominates the room. Customers love the lengthy beer menu, which includes (of course) Kansas City's own Boulevard. The menu offers typical pub grub: sandwiches, a variety of sharable appetizers that scream "happy hour" and a few entrees. We came for drinks and nibbles and loved the atmosphere but were disappointed by the value. A $10.95 order of Sea Hogs (bacon-wrapped shrimp with horseradish dipping sauce) tasted absolutely fabulous with beer, but the five little shrimp felt a bit skimpy. We'll be back, but we'll ask about serving size before ordering.
