Midwest Living Review
It almost seems like a requirement these days that every big city—small town or population center, really—has a cupcake bakery. To say they are trendy really doesn't begin to describe it. And we've heard that the trend has passed and people are tired of cupcakes now. We're not sure who those pundits are, because we can't get enough of that trend, especially when we find cupcake bakeries as good as this one. Cupcake a la Mode also has a location in Leawood, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, and no matter which one you head toward, you'll be happy with what you find. The fist-size cupcakes are moist and perfectly crowned with buttercream icing that isn't too think or buttery.
We tried several from the chocolate menu. The Gold Digger has a caramel center and chocolate buttercream frosting that's been rolled in chopped pecans and topped with caramel drizzle. The Marshamallow Fondue has a fudge filling, marshmallow creme frosting and a dusting of graham crackers on top, and the Bella Nutella celebrates everyone's favorite chocolate-hazelnut spread with a Rocher truffle on top. Tempting vanilla cake options include the Stuffed French Toast, filled with cream cheese and topped with maple buttercream frosting; the Salta Caramella; and the Mama Mia, a tiramisu-inspired confection teeming with Kaluha and dusted with cocoa powder.
Cupcakes cost $3.25 each and easily feed two people; a dozen is $36, and gluten- and dairy-free options are available. If you can't get to KC, you're in luck—online ordering is available, too.
