Midwest Living Review

Susan Pollack
Famous for its breakfast BBQ, this comfy inn within walking distance of Country Club Plaza offers plenty of other special touches, too.

In a city famous for world-class barbecue, there's one upscale bed-and-breakfast where guests can enjoy a gourmet version of the savory dish for breakfast. Nestled on a quiet street near Kansas City's fashionable Country Club Plaza and two art museums, Southmoreland on the Plaza offers barbecue on Saturday mornings, mid-April through mid-October. Guests sip strawberry-mango frappes on the courtyard deck as innkeeper Mark Reichle serves up his signature grilled menu: molasses-brined pork chops and croissant French toast stuffed with grilled peaches and glazed with a homemade maple pecan bourbon sauce. Barbecue or not, breakfast is special every day at the three-story urban inn, a 1913 Colonial Revival whose 12 rooms are named -- and decorated accordingly -- for famous locals such as baseball's Satchel Paige and artist Thomas Hart Benton. Each updated room, and the Carriage House suite, has a full private bath and jetted tub, fireplace or deck. Common areas, including a New England-style dining room, solarium, and living room with fireplace, wet bar and classic video collection, invite relaxation. Complimentary wine and appetizers are served in the early evening, and hot beverages and sweets at night. Popular with both business and leisure travelers, the inn offers Wi-Fi, off-street parking, fitness center access, and in-room amenities such as fresh flowers, apples, sherry, newspapers, turndown service and chocolates on the pillow. Rates range from $109 to $250, depending on number of guests and season.
