Midwest Living Review

Historic character and an attentive staff make the Hotel Frederick ideal for a romantic overnight getaway or pampered stay.

Built in 1905, the Hotel Frederick is full of vintage charm; a 2004 refurbishment preserved details like the fossils in the black-and-white tile floor, the antique grandfather’s clock in the lobby and trundle beds for little ones. Beautiful antiques accent the guest rooms and light filters through stained-glass windows, but alongside that old-fashioned appeal lies a bold modern edge. Solar panels mean the hotel is certified green, and clean-lined headboards stand out against deep yellow and red walls.

Some of the en-suite bathrooms are, shall we say, unique, separated not by solid walls, but by panels of beautifully etched glass. (We saw curtains on some, but not all.) If modesty is an issue, we advise checking out the detailed room descriptions and photos on the website ahead of time. The staff is highly accommodating when it comes to matching guests with the lodging specs they want. Scenic views overlook either the downtown or the Missouri River. Room rates start from $99.

On-site Glenn’s Cafe serves dinners that highlight Cajun food, gulf shellfish and fresh oysters, and there’s a clubby-looking bar with leather chairs that make a perfect perch from which to enjoy something from the broad drink menu.
