Midwest Living Review
If you’re lucky, your tour of the Higgerson School Historic Site in New Madrid, Missouri, will be conducted by a local woman who actually attended grades 1 through 8 in the one-room facility that operated from 1930 until 1968. Relocated from a remote site, the school is now set up to appear as it did in 1948 by showcasing many of the original desks, books and even authentic lunch boxes that students once used. Some of those former students act as tour guides, offering a personal spin that you don’t get from mere professional interpreters.
Tours include a short video and access to the visitors center and museum across the street where guests can gain a fuller understanding of the school and the community it served. Admission is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children age 6 and up.
