Midwest Living Review

Damaine Vonada
We were thoroughly impressed by the level of detail and service at this distinctive lodging.

The Inn at Hermannhof is sophisticated and first class all the way. You can stay at the main inn in downtown Hermann or in a cluster of individual Haus Wineries on East Hill that overlook the Hermannhof Winery and have bird's-eye views of the town and Missouri River. The phenomenal main inn, which dates to the 1800s and has eight suites, is furnished throughout with antiques and exquisite handmade reproduction furniture. Accessories are mostly German folk art: painted chests, rural landscapes and nature motifs. No detail has been spared -- from 1800s-appropriate paint colors and custom trim to bedding and fabulously appointed bathrooms. Guest perks include complimentary bottles of wine and containers of cheese. Breakfast is served on the first level Festhalle and includes sausage made exclusively for the inn from a 100-year-old recipe. The location is great, too, just south of the river and within easy walking distance of the Hermannhoff Winery, shops, restaurants and even a grocery store. The Haus Winery buildings are all cottagelike structures that date from the 1840s to 1860s and were once homes for Hermann residents and farmers. Some of the buildings are on their original sites; others were moved here. Each individually named haus contains separate suites for two (about 20 altogether), all as thoughtfully appointed and comfortable as the suites at the inn. Two suites are available for families with children. One unusual amenity at the Haus Wineries is the Himmelstreppe, a lengthy staircase that runs down the side of East Hill and provides a shortcut to downtown Hermann. From $126. Peak summertime rates start at $168.
