Midwest Living Review

Sparky may be gone, but his namesake ice cream shop and its alcohol-spiked milk shakes draw a never-ending procession of fans.

Even when it's cold and rainy, Sparky's draws a steady stream of customers for homemade flavors like peanut butter or strawberry lemonade sorbet. Yes, this is ice cream, it's not just kids' stuff--adults can order milk shakes mixed with alcohol. The local favorite, Red Wine and Chocolate, contains Ghirardelli chocolate chips and nearby Les Bourgeois Vineyards' sweet Riverboat Red.

Sparky's is named for the owner's bulldog, a loyal companion who died, sadly, at the age of 10 in 2008, but whose ceramic semblance stands guard outside, chained to a tree. The ambience is college-casual, with whimsical paint, mismatched wooden chairs and tables that wobble, plus flyers and leaflets posted on the walls. And popular though it is, Sparky's does shut down once winter truly sets in, except for the odd special event, so get there while it's still warm.
