Midwest Living Review
Comfort food goes classy at the new (spring of 2012) Black Oak Grill occupying a corner spot in the Branson Landing outdoor shopping mall along Lake Taneycomo on the edge of this vacation mecca in southern Missouri. The Black Oak features many dishes that sound familiar, but they're executed with such quality ingredients and spot-on work in the kitchen that they become brand-new conversation pieces. Black Oak's large, high-ceilinged dining room follows a country-chic aesthetic with walls of wide painted wood planks and classy antiques, like horse sculptures and vintage canoes. A patio offers outdoor dining in good weather, and a glass-walled sunroom includes a fireplace and views of the river, where a fire-and-fountain show takes place through the day and evening. The menu's signature items include twists such as chicken-fried flatiron steak topped with mushroom gravy. On our visit, we enjoyed grilled salmon, where enormous garlic mushrooms nearly stole the show from the fish. The Clubhouse Melt sandwich, which comes with fresh potato chips, proved to be enough for a couple of meals. Even a basic grilled cheese and soup lunch combo becomes a memorable dish thanks to five cheeses and multigrain bread in the sandwich and vivid basil flavor in the thick tomato soup.
