Midwest Living Review

Trevor Meers
Splendid seclusion in lush surroundings await less than half an hour from the bright lights and crowds in Branson.

The shows, restaurants and water parks of Branson are just a few miles up the road, but once you arrive at Big Cedar Lodge, you may never want to leave. It seems they thought of everything when they created this expansive resort hugging the shoreline at the southern tip of Table Rock Lake. This upscale property features hotel rooms in three lodges (with rooms overlooking the lake, of course), but beautiful, rough-hewn log cabins hidden among the pine trees are the big draw. Balconies even have their own gas grills, and room service will gladly provide all the fixings for a do-it-yourself barbeque, so you dine in seclusion while watching boats laze on the water below. Given that the resort is owned by the same people who run Bass Pro Shops, there's a definite sportsman's flair, with stuffed birds and fish adorning the walls. (Don't worry, you won't be roughing it—the units are lavishly appointed with all the usual amenities and more.) The outdoorsy theme continues right through to the custom chandeliers, trash cans and streetlights, all hand-cast in the company's workshop nearby and featuring cutouts of various animals. The dining, shopping and recreational choices seem endless, although sitting on a deck doing nothing is also delightful. Organized activities keep the kids busy. Weekend holiday rates (early November through December) start at $131 for a standard lodge room and $561 for a two-bedroom log cabin with loft.
