Midwest Living Review
Winona residents ask every tourist if they've been to Garvin Heights Park yet. With good reason. The park, which is really a scenic overlook, affords you an amazing view of the unique city sitting on a sandbar in the Mississippi River. If the sky is clear, you'll see pretty Lake Winona, the landmark Watkins smokestack and steeples of St. Stanislaus, a thin blue ribbon of the Mississippi, and maybe even several notable points in Wisconsin, such as Maiden Rock. And, of course, the beautiful bluffs lining the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi. If you've got the energy, you can take a scenic trail from the overlook down to the highway below. (It says you're going to Lower Garvin Heights Park, but you really come out on the roadside; Lower Garvin Heights Park, locals say, is actually at least a half-mile farther down the road.) The trail starts out with a steep set of stairs, changing to a meandering dirt path -- a beautiful descent to cap off a spectacular overlook.
