Midwest Living Review

Lisa Meyers McClintick
This casual hangout offers lots of local flavor and a menu highlighting Faribault's locally produced blue cheese.

With a wide-ranging menu that includes salads, soups, pastas, steaks, seafood and Southwestern fare, the Depot makes dining decisions difficult. But anything that features locally made cheese—Faribault Dairy’s deep-fried curds and Caves of Faribault’s blue, for instance—is a safe bet.

The bar and dining areas feel neighborly and inviting with memorabilia and vintage photos covering the  brick walls. Built in 1902, the depot building served Rock Island train passengers for six decades then transitioned into the bar and grill in 1992.

The steaks and ribs are solid choices, but locals lean toward the fine-dining-worthy black and Ama-Blu burger topped with grilled onions. Ask for sweet potato fries on the side. The chef's savory five-onion soup au gratin is a great way to warm up on a chilly night, and the sweet and nutty Ravin’ Craisin salad complements nicely with caramelized walnuts, blue cheese, grilled chicken and poppyseed dressing.

Depot’s homemade root beer is delish. Other beverage options include draft beer, summery drink specials, blended frozen concoctions like the Cocomotion (dark rum, pina colada mix and lime juice) and old-fashioned ice cream drinks.
