Midwest Living Review

Trevor Meers
The romance of sleeping aboard a houseboat facing the Saint Paul skyline makes up for quarters that can feel a little cramped.

Admit it: Ever since Sleepless In Seattle, you’ve harbored a little dream of trying life on a houseboat. The Covington Inn gives you the chance one night at a time in a B&B floating on the Mississippi River across from downtown Saint Paul. The tugboat outfitted in mahogany and brass sits permanently moored along Harriett Island Park, which gives guests instant access to riverside walks and shows at the Centennial Showboat next door. The shops, restaurants and theaters of downtown Saint Paul are about five minutes away by car via the nearby bridge.

Stays in the Covington’s four suites are cozy, as you’d expect aboard a boat. The bathroom in the upstairs Master’s Quarters was snug (as was the spiral staircase leading to it), and the shower's water pressure was little better than a trickle. But these were compromises we could live with compared to the overall room, which features wood paneling, large windows overlooking the river and the Saint Paul skyline, and access to a deck on the boat’s top level. At night, Saint Paul’s lights reflect on the river, creating a charming view that reminds you why a stay here makes for a far more interesting getaway.

Rates start at $140 and include a typical, if fairly basic, B&B breakfast and free parking in a lot about 100 yards from the boat.
