Midwest Living Review
It may look like a bar on the outside--and on the inside, for that matter--but its name tells you all you need to know about American Burger Bar. Located in downtown St. Paul since March 2009, this place takes the all-American meal very seriously. And while not cheap, the concept of choosing every aspect of your burger can be very appealing. Your choices begin with meat: Black Angus, kobe, turkey, bison and lamb (plus veggie, for those who prefer meatless), with prices ranging from $6.95 to $11.95. That, however, is just the beginning. Every topping costs extra. Add cheese, onion, bacon or a dozen-plus other options, including everything from sprouts to asparagus and grilled shrimp to black truffles. Finally, choose your bun--white, whole wheat, onion or ciabatta. Consider skipping shoestring French fries on the side in favor crunchy, thick-sliced onion rings. As to the atmsophere, expect dark and old-fashioned, with heavy wood-paneled walls, high-backed red leather booths, a large fireplace and a long bar with the de rigueur flat screen TVs tuned to sports channels. Service can be a bit slow, so take that into consideration when making plans.
