Midwest Living Review

Lisa Meyers McClintick
The rooms here are sadly dated and smell unpleasant, which is unfortunate for a historic hotel with such a friendly, professional staff.

The grand dame of Rochester hotels, The Kahler Grand was founded in 1921 to cater to Mayo Clinic patients and their families. That's clearly still the focus. The overriding atmosphere is warm, attentive and caring service; the staff is clearly aware that many guests are going through trying times. The service is more impressive than the guest rooms. Standard rooms (doubles from $99) are clean and comfortable enough, but they're smallish and feel dated, with occasional paneling, tacky furniture and old-fashioned window coverings. The baths have old, low-to-the-ground toilets, dated fixtures, rusted faucets and tubs that stop up quickly. Deluxe rooms (about $50 more per night) do better, with nicer, newer furniture and decor. With 668 rooms and 15 suites, the idea seems to be providing clean and reasonably priced accommodations to meet a wide range of incomes. If the clinic is the reason for your visit, The Kahler Grand location couldn't be better. It's directly across from the medical center, linked by skyway and subway. Pretty much every service you could need is within the complex, including a gallery of more than 60 shops and restaurants. The hotel operates a casual grill, a more upscale restaurant and a lounge. It also has a fitness center and a nice domed rooftop area with pool, whirlpool and sauna for guests (though that center isn't open 24 hours). The Kahler Grand provides a free shuttle to other shopping areas and movie theaters, too. If the focus of your visit is Mayo Clinic, there's really no need for a car if you stay here.
