Midwest Living Review
Anyone who has sampled the decadent Alsatian pastries at Daube's Bakery will know not to miss its European bistro. For those not in the know, the bakery--and the bistro--makes everything from scratch with real butter, real cream and fresh ingredients. The bistro menu is filled with the French-German flavors of the Alsace region, including boeuf a la mode, pate, quiches and fresh soups like green-pea puree. There are regional favorites, too, like pan-crusted walleye, wild rice risotto cakes and sandwiches nested in thick, chewy bread. Jasper's is a place where you really must save room for dessert. Here the chefs really shine, with pear-almond tortes, raspberry-filled linzer torte, kolaches and a signature carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Combine the menu with the setting--a sweet brick building tucked among antique shops--and Jasper's is a pleasant place to savor the rich flavors of the Old Country.
