Midwest Living Review

Lisa Meyers McClintick
The St. James is one of the oldest hotels in Minnesota, and its rooms—each with its own look—offer a taste of bygone elegance.

Staying at the St. James Hotel is bit like tearing a page from a history book. Its tin ceilings, carved wood headboards and elaborate hand-stitched quilts are all reminders of its colorful Victorian history. (If you love high ceilings, book a room on one of the lower floors.) Built in 1875, the hotel was considered a marvel in modern convenience, what with its hot-and-cold running water, gas heat and state-of-the-art kitchen. Fortunately, its 19th-century appearance doesn't mean a lack of 21st-century amenities. Guests have access to wireless Internet, whirlpool tubs, spa services and two full-service restaurants. No two rooms are alike, each displaying its unique Victorian finery, but not in a fussy, overstuffed way. Decor is elegant, yet simple and comfortable. The St. James offers many seasonal events, including wine-tastings, theater packages and eagle-watching (patrons observe the birds on the Mississippi River from the windows of the hotel's Summit Room). The town of Red Wing also offers a number of attractions, including antiques shops, boutiques, music and theater events at the restored Sheldon Auditorium, hiking and biking along river cliff trails, winery tours and the nearby Treasure Island Casino.
