Midwest Living Review

Lisa Meyers McClintick
Pottery and antiques fans could spend an entire weekend happily browsing their way through Red Wing's historic Pottery Place and downtown.

Red Wing has always been one of Minnesota's most beloved shopping destinations for antiques seekers, especially the intensely loyal Red Wing pottery fanatics. A small museum at the three-story Pottery Place retail complex shows the evolution of pottery in Red Wing, from roughly crafted old-world crocks for butter, sauerkraut and pickles to elegant dinnerware decades later. And those collectible pieces (and much more) can be found at Pottery Place Antiques. Nostalgia lovers can easily roam for hours through vast, dense aisles of floral juice glasses, Watts ware, rare bottles, vintage hats and aprons, rare toys, beer glasses, old books, and colorful quilts. May through October, visitors get even more choices with the Pottery Place's outdoor flea markets the first and third weekends of the month. Other noteworthy stores include playful women's wear at Whimsy's Closet, sassy pajamas and fragrant bath products at Bed and Bath Treasures, cooking gear and gadgets at Pete's Kitchen Corner, and more than 10,000 pairs of casual, comfortable shoes and boots from Merrell, CAT and Wolverine at the Hush Puppies outlet store. Next door to Pottery Place, Red Wing Pottery and Shops (1920 W. Main St., 800-228-0174) has its full line of iconic crocks, handmade salt-glazed stoneware, and popular novelties such as coffee mugs, lamp bases and French butter dishes. The bread bakers work well with another local favorite: Sturdiwheat bread or buckwheat pancake mixes. Prefer more color? This also is the nation's No. 1 retailer of Fiestaware and boasts an extensive selection of kitchenware and decor. Connecting shops sell playful birdbaths, women's clothing, candy and Minnesota souvenirs.
