Midwest Living Review

Melanie Radzicki McManus
For that cozy pub atmosphere, great food and good suds, come up to Jimmy's on the fifth floor of the historic St. James Hotel.

Ah, the lure of an old English pub. Or a faux old English pub. The rich, dark paneling. Leather chairs. Expansive mahogany bar. Crackling fire. And great, hearty fare. Jimmy's, tucked into the fifth floor of Red Wing's historic St. James Hotel, has all of the above. But surprisingly, even shockingly, its beer list is quite thin. Ten domestic beers are available, but only 10 import/craft beers. And most of the latter are nothing special, such as Heineken and Corona. Where are the great English lagers and ales? Or the famed Irish Guinness? The wine list is also slim, with only 10 varieties available.Luckily, the food (billed as appetizers and light dinners) is fantastic and reasonably priced. The dishes are on the standard side; think steak quesadillas, chicken breast sandwiches, fish and chips, thin-crust pizza. But the portions are filling and expertly cooked; no dry meat or soggy veggies here. The presentations are also attractive. Prices run $7-$14 for appetizers, $9-$13 for entrees.Every Friday night, the pub features live entertainment. So if you want a great meal in a pleasing atmosphere, head to Jimmy's. But if you're going with beer on the brain, you might want to reconsider.
