Midwest Living Review

In a town with limited breakfast options, the Wild Onion Cafe offers the most inspired menu, but beware of under-seasoned yet over-priced dishes.

The menu at the Wild Onion Cafe looks encouraging: wild blueberry pancakes, a variety of egg scrambles featuring fresh ingredients, venison sausage and applewood smoked bacon. But with egg scrambles starting at $8.95, prices seem a little steep. Then you notice how quiet it is. Seated at tables spaced only about a foot apart, everyone seems so nervous that their conversation will be overheard that no one talks at all. The service appears inconsistent, even over the course of a single visit. If you'd like a refill of coffee, you may have to indicate that to your server. The food's beautifully presented, although serving sizes are skimpy. The toast turns out to be a single slice, and the amount of fresh fruit on the plate is merely a garnish of orange slice and a strawberry sliver. The food is a bit bland, definitely not remarkable enough to rescue the dining experience from the lackluster. With a beautiful view of the Grand Marais harbor and a menu that really does look good, the Wild Onion has great potential. Unfortunately plenty of service and culinary issues need to be smoothed over before the restaurant can justify its prices and warrant a stop.
