Midwest Living Review

Ada Igoe
This eclectically furnished apartment offers a funky little home-away-from-home in the convenience of downtown Grand Marais.

As you climb the stairs to this two-bedroom loft, you're overwhelmed with a sense of atmosphere that's hard to place. Vintage furniture fills the apartment, warm paint hues reminiscent of Cuba or Mexico coat the walls, and shelves brim with local artwork, collectibles and books. The small space has a lived-in feel and plenty of quirks, like a shelf of clocks in the living room all set to 8:35. The kitchen is well equipped; there's a lovely reading/writing nook overlooking the backyard; and if the space ever seems cramped, the living room and master bedroom both offer a claustrophobia-quenching view of vast Lake Superior. Folks who value cleanliness and order should note that this apartment has a definite lived-in feel. (The kitchen-floor was sticky from floor wax on our visit, and we found dust on the coffee table.) Normally these kinds of issues would be real red flags, but this place has such character, a little dust really wasn't a deal breaker. We really enjoyed our stay here.Located in the middle of downtown Grand Marais and within easy walking distance of most town eateries and attractions, the loft is a convenient place to call home for a weekend or longer. Summer rentals of the loft start at $195 a night. The backyard, where wildflowers entwine pieces of found art, is a secluded corner to barbecue or lounge in the sun on a large, multilevel deck. Grand Marais provides plenty of more "tourist-centric" accommodations than the loft, but folks who want to tap into Grand Marais' arts scene will love it here.
